Overall Scope
Responsible for the accounting, tax and finance operations of Tokyo office.
To act as the custodian of the finances in Tokyo, financial advisor to the Tokyo Managing Partner and as a mentor to the partners on the firm's finance related matters.
Key responsibilities as follows:
Operational Responsibility
o Day to day supervision of the finance department.
o Monitor and implement internal control.
o Overseeing the billing function to ensure that bills are issued in a timely and efficient manner and within established cut-off times.
o Proactively monitoring and controlling expenditure.
o Overall responsibility over client trust monies in accordance with the UK Law Society, Solicitors Accounts Rules.
o Hands on Work In Progress management with the partners.
o Active management of the debt collection process. Which includes regular liaison and follow up with partners.
o Liaison with banks, auditors and other statutory bodies as required from time to time.
o Overseeing the installation of new financial programmes in the Tokyo office
o Liaison with London and Singapore as required.
o Dealing with Income Tax and corporate tax filling and tax related issues.
o Liaison with internal and external auditors and tax advisors.
Reporting
o Weekly and monthly reporting on a timely and accurate basis.
o Statutory accounts and reporting as required.
o Preparing reports as required by the business from time to time.
Presentations/Analysis/Mentoring
o Preparing financial presentation for local needs as requested.
o Analytical review of business trends, expense management, PPP analysis and other key economic indicators to assist with setting direction for the business and legal products.
o Act as a financial mentor and advisor to other support departments.
Budget/ Forecast
o Preparation of annual budgets, re-budgets and forecasts as and when required.
o Preparation of financial commentaries as required.
Development
o Responsible for the development of personal technical skills.
o Responsible for the development and training of subordinates.
Reporting Line
o To the Managing Partner of the Tokyo with a dotted line to the Chief Operating Officer, Asia Region, based in Singapore
Team
o The finance team in Tokyo currently consists of four accountants/ bookkeepers who would report to the Financial Controller.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will:
(i) Be a seasoned finance professional with a professional qualification (CPA, Chartered Accountant etc) with a minimum of 12 – 15 years experience of which five years experience at a management level. Exposure to professional services, firm or a partnership would be desirable.
(ii) Needs to be fluent in English. Japanese language skills are preferable but not mandatory.
(iii) Is required to have knowledge of local accounting, reporting and tax requirements.
