More info
This clock was manufactured in Japan for use in American schools.
Approximately 1890, this clock was placed in a one-room schoolhouse my grandmother attended as a child near Vinita, Oklahoma. In 1914, the schoolhouse was torn down to make room for a new school. Shortly before the demolition, her father (my great-grandfather) bought the clock from the school. The clock has been either used or stored since.
My grandmother told me that the smudges on the face are from her teacher’s habit of setting the clock with her pencil. She said the “school-marm” made a ritual of winding and setting the clock each Monday morning.
You can see the Logo of Clock Manufacturer’s of Japan on the face, and the original Inspectors sticker on the top.
The clock keeps excellent time, and chimes each half hour.
