I think it's hard for a millenial to understand the decisions of Alice in this book as she moves from financial independence into wifehood, and gives up her job. Alice was born in 1946, and she remembers the shock of JWK's assassination. She is truly shaken when it occurs to her that she is not happy in her marriage. She's pretty gutsy, because she leaves her husband with their daughter, and, as it turns out he is still so crazy about her and manages to find the right resources to give up his alcohol habit. His ability to do that, I know from personal experience in my childhood, is not a forgone conclusion when someone is faced with losing their family. Most alcoholics need to fall a lot further, before they finally decide to go to AA meetings, find a sponsor, etc.

Alice is modeled on Laura Bush (wife of ex-President GW Bush), and I did look her up in Wikipedia to learn more about her, after reading the book.

“Sittenfeld installs herself deep within the psyche of the tight-lipped wife of the president and emerges with an evenhanded, compassionate look at her mind and heart. . . . Powerfully intimate. Grade: A.”—The Washington Post Book World

“A sparkling, sprawling novel . . . a ridiculously gifted writer . . . Sittenfeld has harnessed her talents perfectly in American Wife, producing an exhilarating epic infused with humor, pain and hope.”—BookPage

“A well-researched book that imagines what lies behind that placid facade of the first lady . . . Ms. Sittenfeld was not out to sensationalize but sympathize. The portraits of Laura and W.—known as Alice and Charlie Blackwell here—are trenchant and make you like them more.”—Maureen Dowd, The New York Times
