By Robert Cormier
Warning: The plots are dark, and give rise to many, many discussion points. This is for when the child is becoming an adult and life is becoming a lot more complicated. There are so many hypocracies to negotiate, and then there are the cruel realities. The rose colored lensese are coming off. There is the struggle to apply a simplistic moral code to an often hostile world.

I AM THE CHEESE (1977) ¥500 can be mailed anywhere in Japan for additional ¥180
Incredible narrative. Fast paced in a screwed up and mind-twisting world... and also a psychological thriller. The language is tense, and easily evokes the struggle to survive.
Needs to be included in the group of books that young adults becoming politically aware start to read, such as Lord of the Flies, 1984 (Orwell), and so on.
It won the 1997 Phoenix Award from the Children's Literature Association as the best English-language children's book that did not win a major award when it was originally published twenty years earlier. (In my opinion it is even better than The Chocolate War).
ISBN 0440940605

THE CHOCOLATE WAR (1974) ¥500 can be mailed anywhere in Japan for additional ¥208 (both books together can be mailed for the same ¥208 cost)
ISBN 0440944597
Perhaps Cormier's most famous book because it is often assigned in high school and has also been banned from several school systems in the USA, for violence, sexual content, etc.
I won't give anything away, but there are plenty of issue for debates including bullying, power harrassment (from teachers), ethics, football as metaphor, and on and on.
The New York Times Book Review declared, "Mr. Cormier is almost unique in his powerful integration of the personal, political and moral"
The Chocolate War has won numerous book awards:
1974 School Library Journal Best Books of the Year
1974 ALA Best Books for Young Adults
1974 New York Times Notable Books of the Year
1979 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award
1991 Margaret A. Edwards Award
