Tour Guide (Harajuku, Tokyo)

Start date: As soon as possible.
Locations: Harajuku, Shibuya, Akihabara and other central Tokyo areas, including Shimokitazawa
Employment type: Part-time / shift-based
Pay: ¥2,000 per hour
Most tours last four hours, giving a base payment of ¥8,000 per tour. An additional ¥2,000 performance bonus may be paid based on guest feedback, reliability and tour quality.
Necessary transport during the tour is covered. Where the itinerary includes a meal, the guide’s meal is also covered. Guests may occasionally leave tips, but tips are not guaranteed.
The role:
You will guide private groups around Tokyo using a prepared itinerary.
Your responsibilities include:
🔵 Welcoming and engaging guests
🔵 Keeping the tour running smoothly and on schedule
🔵 Helping guests with shops, restaurants and activities
🔵 Explaining Japanese culture, food, customs and language
🔵 Adapting the tour when plans change
🔵 Taking plenty of high-quality guest photos
🔵 Creating a fun, friendly and memorable experience
Many of our guests are families with children, so confidence entertaining and communicating with both children and adults is important.
Schedule:
Tours operate Monday to Sunday.
Typical tour times:
10:30–14:30
13:00–17:00
14:30–18:30
Regular weekend availability is required, although tours also take place on weekdays.
We normally aim to provide approximately one week’s notice. Occasionally, we may ask whether you are available for a booking with 24 to 48 hours’ notice.
Requirements:
🔵 Fluent or advanced English
🔵 Intermediate Japanese or higher
🔵 Able to explain menus, kanji, omikuji and everyday Japanese customs to guests
🔵 Excellent communication and customer-service skills
🔵 Confident working with families and children
🔵 Positive, energetic, friendly and outgoing
🔵 Reliable and punctual
🔵 Comfortable carrying a small camera and taking plenty of photos
🔵 Strong interest in Tokyo and Japanese culture
🔵 Familiarity with Harajuku, Shibuya and central Tokyo
🔵 Valid permission to work in Japan
🔵 Intention to remain in Japan long-term
🔵 Able to commute reliably to central Tokyo
🔵 Experience in tourism, hospitality, childcare, teaching, photography or customer service is strongly preferred.
🔵 Interests such as Harajuku fashion, kawaii culture, food, anime, manga, gaming, purikura and themed cafés are a plus.
